Message however stretching a tire helps to increase the contact patch and increases the sidewall rigidity as well (which prevents the tread from rolling over, what I believe the main reason why raising tire pressure generally increases cornering grip), stretching also allows you to run a lower tire pressure and get a larger contact patch without compromising sidewall rigidity/cornering, there is really no benefit in running a bulged tire (besides the small gain in tire width which is almost negated since the shoulders bow up). As with almost anything else, there is extremes to everything to the point of diminishing returns, just like you can run too much camber, you can over-stretch a tire to the point that it becomes a safety issue, as well as sacrificing tire width with no additional gain in sidewall rigidity/cornering advantage. I admit this is all just my theory, feel free to flame me internet warriors!
